Short Explanation of How to Play

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza takes the simple, traditional card game Slapjack and adds some twists to add to the fun. First, each person flips a card from their deck to the center pile and says one of the items from the title in order ... “taco,” “cat,” “goat,” “cheese,” or “pizza.” If the item that person says shows up, then everyone slaps the deck as fast as they can. The last person to slap takes all of the cards. The twists come in if the groundhog, gorilla, or narwhal show up on the pile. Then, each player needs to do the motion corresponding to that animal and then slap the center pile... and again the last person gets the whole center pile. The game ends when someone runs out of cards (or, the winner can be done, and other players can continue playing to decide 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.)

Why it Works/Doesn't Work For Our Family

What Worked: This game is simple with rules and is a lot of fun. The games move quickly, and while it can take awhile if you have players of equal skill, it is always moving, and the players are constantly engaged with it until the end.

What Was Challenging: Nothing much is challenging for us with this game. It is a game of skill and speed more than a game of strategy and planning. If you aren’t fast enough, you aren’t going to win. This wasn’t an issue for us, as we had fun anyway, but it could potentially be an issue for others.

Why it Works/Doesn't Work With Friends

I have not attempted this game with my gaming friends, and probably wouldn’t try it unless we were looking to play a high intensity, low strategy game.

Teacher's Corner

If I was looking to develop someone’s speed and reflexes, this is one avenue to do it. Would I use this game to do so? Probably not. I’d look to other avenues. I would pull this game out to have fun with my family.

Overall opinion, rating, and recommendation

6 year old son - My son would get excited when we played this game and a slap card showed up and we raced to slap the cards first. The high intensity of this game and the chaos fit his personality well.

9 year old daughter - My daughter likes playing this game, and also likes the big moments that present themselves when a slap card comes on the table. She is more competitive, so she was also focused more on winning this game as we played it.

Mine - I will rate this game Casual Family. It isn’t difficult to play. Skill and speed are completely necessary to win the game, while strategy and planning are not utilized. Great fun for kids and families. When you understand the game, you know everything about how to play and there is not a variety of gameplay. If a group likes doing the same thing over and over with no variety, only the challenge of skill vs. skill, then this is a great game. The mechanics make it a lot of fun. If a group is searching for variety, this game doesn’t present any after a few playthroughs of a fairly quick game.

Games with similarities with this one at each rating level:

  1. Casual Family: War / Slapjack / Speed

  2. Heavy Family: Pit

  3. Casual Adult: Dutch Blitz

  4. Heavy Adult: -
